Ameriwood recalls 1. 6 million
chests after tip-over injury
Ameriwood Home, a manufacturer of casegoods
and residential furniture, is recalling 1. 6 million
of its Mainstay four-drawer chests after one of the
chests fell onto a four-year-old.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said the chests are unstable if not
anchored to the wall, which could cause the piece
to tip over and cause serious injuries or death of
The CPSC found that the chests do not comply
with the performance requirements of the U.S.
voluntary industry standard.
“Consumers should immediately stop using any
recalled chest that is not properly anchored to the
wall and place it into an area that children cannot
access,” said the CPSC in its report.
Made in both the U.S. and Canada, the chests
were primarily sold at Walmart stores and online
from April 2009 through May 2016 for around
$60. The Mainstay drawer chests featured plastic
drawer glides, a single decorative pull on each
drawer, and came in six colors.
