Let them go
Let me share some personal experiences. I was working with a company
and during the morning meetings one
person would literally turn their chair
around and face the opposite direction of everyone else. That person was
sending out a very clear signal, they
were not interested in helping the company and demonstrated a clear lack of
respect for management.
This person was a sticking point for
years, and management didn’t want
to let him go because he was probably
one of the most talented woodworkers
in the whole factory, and maybe the
country, he was truly amazing. But I
believe the damage he did to the overall team far outweighed his talent. The
area he worked in struggled the most
to implement lean, despite a bunch of
other great people in that department.
Another example comes from my
factory. I had a few employees who
were great people, they needed the
job, and I knew they would struggle to
find work elsewhere. We were tolerat-
ing them because they tried hard, but
the reality was they weren’t perform-
ing. Thank god for my community of
lean maniac friends. One Saturday, I
was lamenting over what I should do,
and my good buddy Josh (inventor of
the bottoms-up beer dispenser) said,
“Pick up the phone, and let them go.
Asset or hindrance?
I picked up the phone, had that
awkward conversation. It lasted three
minutes, and I was so relieved when it
was done. The productivity increase
was immediate on the shop floor.
